Freddie Mercury’s Bohemian Rhapsody Sunglasses are Steeped in Symbolism

True rock stars wear great sunglasses.

Sunglasses and rock stars go hand-in-hand. In the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek donned a pair of classic aviators to give Freddie Mercury the rock star look he deserved.

The actor wears aviators multiple times throughout the movie. Of course, in true Freddie Mercury fashion, these aren’t ordinary takes on the style.

The first pair of note is a large pair with tinted, red/pink lenses. You can see them in the Instagram post below. These fit the larger-than-life personality the singer was trying to portray at this stage of his career.

Later, as things start to turn and the main character begins to retreat from public life, he wears a pair with highly reflective lenses. You can see these shades in the image at the top of this page. While the symbolism may be that he wants to block out the media, the glasses still stand out as a unique look.

What frames does Freddie Mercury wear?

We don’t know the exact frames Freddie Mercury wears in the movie. Both pairs have a pretty standard aviator shape with the major difference being the lens. They also have both have a silver-colored metal frame.

The second pair looks a lot like Ray-Ban Aviators with a silver frame and grey mirror lens. You can check them out on Amazon by clicking here or on the official Ray-Ban website by clicking here.

If you’re on a budget it’s also worth noting that Amazon has some cheaper pairs that appear to have the same look. These ones by ZeroUV are well-reviewed.

It was much harder to find an accurate match for the first pair mentioned in this article. These shades by Ray-Ban come pretty close, although they might be slightly too pink. It’s also worth checking out the Ray-Ban website as you can customize shades yourself to get the exact color combination you want.
